For those who follow the Druids, I want to report having just gotten back from an eventful visit to Lamar. True, the Druids are having a bad year overall (lost their pups, lost their beautiful alpha female, and they are all suffering from mange - some worse than others) but I watched them kick butt and defend their valley from three invading Wyoming wolves. The three of them were big and healthy and robust males while the Druids were skinny and down on their luck, but they whupped those invaders soundly.
I have now seen 480's fabled skills as a battle general. I was standing in the Footbridge lot. The three Wyoming wolves were howling from the hills to the south, just east of Dead Puppy. 480 and a second Druid had crossed the river and travelled towards them, then they baited them, turning and seemingly daring them to come get me! The three males took the bait and chased 480 and his lieutenant to the north side of the road. Once they got there, 480 and his lieutenant stopped and waited for the Wyoming Trio to reach the road. At that point 480 sprung his trap - five other Druids came charging out of the north hills where they had been "waiting" for this moment. They turned the tables on those Wyoming wolves and the trio scattered - one went east, the other doubled back south and the third, a gray-going-black was chased west by 480 himself. That gray-going-black wolf ran like the very devil was behind him, streaking through the flats with his tail between his legs. We watched him travel the entire length of the Footbridge lot and on he went around the corner to Hitching Post. We figured he'd get halfway to Gardiner before he stopped running.
480 had stopped chasing him well east of the Footbridge. 8~)
Then the victorious Druids all headed back up the north side and gathered on the little rocky top hill for some congratulations and several lengthy howling sessions. It was a good day to be a Druid fan.
